RJA was retained by the Town of Trappe, Maryland in 2001 to
prepare an official zoning map for the community. This project completed the update of the
Towns Comprehensive Plan and implementing regulations to meet the requirements of
the 1992 Planning Act.
Following preparation of the Official
Zoning Map, the Town retained RJA to prepare a special "Village Overlay" zone.
The Town of Trappe originated as a typical cross-roads village. To protect and preserve
the "feel" of the old town center, the Village Overlay Zone is used to guide the
overall appearance of Trappes built environment. The intention is not to legislate
style or taste, but rather to ensure that additions to the community complement, blend
with, and improve the general attractiveness and appearance of Trappe. New construction
and improvements to existing structures in the Village Overlay Zone should take design
inspiration from the simple forms and building masses that are prevalent in the Village
Center. Construction projects that are attractive, with good site planning, including
structures, circulation, and landscaping, will be rewarded with speedy approvals and by
consumer acceptance in the marketplace. The design elements contained in the design
guidelines brochure are intended to provide current and future property owners with
guidance in planning new structures, alterations, or additions to existing structures
within the Village Overlay Zone. These design elements are the best way to influence the
future landscape of the town while maintaining its rural Eastern Shore village
character.
