Redman/Johnston Associates, Ltd.
(RJA), was contracted in 1999 by the City of Cambridge, Maryland to assist the City in
updating its Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations and Zoning Map. RJAs
approach to the project was to utilize the Citys comprehensive rezoning process as
an opportunity to develop a modern implementation program that would be effective in
helping to achieve the development and quality objectives of the community while at the
same time strengthening the Citys ability to administer its implementation program.
RJA worked with a committee composed
of representatives of the Mayor and Commissioners, Planning Commission, Board of Appeals,
legal counsel, staff, major stake holders and the public, and during a series of
workshops, was able to educate the group about zoning concepts and their applications. The
result was a nucleus of key City representatives who thoroughly understand the Citys
zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations and their intent. Following the workshops,
RJA assisted the City in the public review process. This included presentations at public
hearings and/or information meetings. As part of this review process, RJA will recommend
procedures for the consideration and disposition of individual rezoning requests.
